Merida, Yucatan — The National Guard today begins protecting the international airport from violence, drugs and Uber drivers.
Digital ride-share platforms, which also include Cabify and DiDi, are prohibited from competing with taxis that have been awarded airport concessions. Airport manager Héctor Navarrete Muñoz indicated that his staff will comply with the provisions established by the federal government.
On Tuesday, the National Taxi Movement indicated that after a meeting, the Ministry of the Interior agreed to request the Ministry of Communications and Transportation and the National Guard to operate at all Mexican airports to prevent Uber-type drivers from working in these federal zones.
Subsequently, the federal undersecretary of government, Ricardo Peralta Saucedo, clarified that there is no special operation supported by the National Guard against Uber drivers at the airport. But he said patrols will enforce the ban, and all other relevant laws that govern the facilities.
Navarrete Muñoz said that Merida airport will duly abide by the rules established on this issue, but “the federal government is the one who will decide what is going to be done with these platforms and the National Guard will ensure that airports comply with it.”
The airport is also protected by Federal Police.
