Its the National Day of the Combi, a day for fans of the iconic Volkswagen Bus, also called a Transporter, Kombi, T2 or a Hippie-van, depending on the country.
In Mexico, they’re called Combis, and members of the “Club T-2 Combis Yucatán” are informally exhibiting theirs in Chelem.
The club was started three years ago, said Renán Humberto Sánchez Ortiz, first consisting of four owners and admirers of the Combi, who found each other on Facebook.
Numerous Combi Facebook groups exist for Yucatecans who are devoted to Combis: Combis del Mayab and T2 Company Yucatán. Each has hundreds of members.
Out of production for more than four years, the boxy minivan has cult status in Mexico. Owners like to trick them out and paint them in bright colors.
Sánchez Ortiz owns a 1981 Combi, which has a camper attachment. His pet name for his Combi “La Cézaza” for its red color.
A national event for fans will be held in Guadalajara next year.
The Volkswagen Combi started production on March 8, 1950 and ended in Brazil on Dec. 31, 2013, after more than 3,500,000 were manufactured in its 63 long years of existence.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen promises to revive the Combi in a few years with an electric model.
