Mérida, Yucatán —To undermine mosquito-driven diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and zika, this weekend the state Ministry of Health is organizing a descacharrización, or bulk trash removal.

The collection of old pots, tires, scrap metal, or anything that could hold rainwater and breed larvae, begins 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday in the south of the city, and the following day at the same time Sunday in the north.

The campaign will be held in comisarías on Saturday, July 1 and Sunday, July 2, on the same schedule.

The state is sending out brigades totaling 570 workers, 380 dump trucks and 81 vehicles that will crisscross the colonías and comisarías.

Mirza Tec Kumul, deputy director of Public Health, revealed that so far this year, 41 cases of dengue fever and 11 cases of zika have been reported in the state. No chikungunya cases has been recorded.

The unit urges the public to bring refuse that accumulates water to the corner of their blocks the day before pickup.
