Mérida, Yucatán — Allowing never-before-seen views of some of the Centro’s most revered historic treasures, the Music Palace is unabashedly modern.

The Music Palace, which opened in June, was designed as an expression of contemporary architecture while paying respect to its historical context.

Both its location as well as its public programs make El Palacio de la Música compelling, the architecture site Design Boom has written. The site also published photos, elevations and floor plans of the state-funded project.

The Music Palace’s design is a collaboration between four studios: Alejandro Medina ArquitecturaReyes Ríos + Larraín ArquitectosMuñoz Arquitectos, and Quesnel Arquitectos.

The complex, which includes a museum and concert hall, was conceived as a revitalization of its historical downtown neighborhood and a catalyst for public space.

To set a precedent for contemporary building within a site with such a significant architectural heritage, the building serves as a plaza which emphasizes and frames the surrounding historical structures, particularly the neighboring Church of the Third Order, which dates to the 1600s.

The green terrace rooftop further expresses the magnificence and scale of the surrounding Spanish colonial structures, including the city’s imposing cathedral.

The building is comprised of four stories. The underground level features an interactive museum for Mexican music which narrates the evolution of Mexican folk music from its origins to present day.

At street level, the open plan allows pedestrians to filter through the courtyard and access the concert hall and the trova archive, the largest outside Mexico City.
