Mérida, Yucatán — The mixed-use development at the airport’s entrance will be called Meridiano, and its coming into focus very quickly.

The plans also reveal just how much buildable property is tucked into a busy corner of the city.

Four executive hotels, a shopping center, cinemas, restaurants, and a large lot for car rentals are planned, with much of it intended to be a reality in the middle of 2019.

The developer has deep pockets. Luis Hevia Martínez, head of Bterra Real Estate — a Bepensa company — said their former Cristal plant is on eight hectares/20 acres. They will move their beverage operations to the Pacabtún neighborhood.

Seeing the strategic potential of the growing Mérida airport, Hevia Martínez said the Meridiano project is divided into two stages.

The first will conclude next year, erecting two eight-story hotels, two restaurants and a car rental company on two hectares/five acres.

Simultaneously, a parking lot will provide spaces for car rental companies in the area because they lack enough land to park their vehicles in high tourist seasons.

The second stage is more fuzzy. The remaining space will get two more hotels, plus restaurants, pharmacies and department stores, but the timeframe was not spelled out.

No store or hotel brands were mentioned. Speculation that a Walmart would arise on the parcel was not addressed.
