Mérida, Yucatán — The entire country is preparing for its traditional commemoration on Sept. 15, and the capital of Yucatán is no exception.
The city will be decorated with around 240 patriotic flags, shields and other symbols of Mexico’s independence.
The director of Municipal Public Services, Luis Montalvo Duarte, reported that this year the departments of General Services and Public Lighting East and West, as well as the department of parks and gardens, worked on the maintenance and rehabilitation of 200 ornaments.
Likewise, he said that this year 40 new pieces were acquired which will be installed along the Paseo de Montejo and on Calle 60. Most of the decorations light up at night.
City crews will focus on Calle 60 from 57 to 47, the Plaza Grande, the Paseo de Montejo from the Remate to the Monumento a la Patria, Avenida Hidalgo, the Prolongación from the Monumento to the Col. Mexico, and the roundabout at El Pocito.
Parks at Santiago, Santa Lucía, Mejorada, San Cristóbal, Parque de la Col. Hidalgo, Tabheta in Altabrisa, Kalia and Las Américas will be dressed up.
At the Remate, decorations will include a statue of Hidalgo and an eagle, both in fiberglass; a full wagon and six wagons made of wood and a metal cactus, all symbols of Mexico’s history.
The Liberty Fountain in Parque de la Paz, the overpass in front of Gran Plaza and the “Bienvenidos” arch on Avenida Itzaes will also be festooned with patriotic ornaments.
