Mérida, Yucatán — The city has plenty of dicey intersections, but three of them have been named the most dangerous of them all.
The insurance company Axa crunched its numbers to name:
- Where cars crisscross at the monument to Justo Sierra on Paseo Montejo between the hotels and the Walmart
- The traffic circle around the Mestiza monument in Fracc. Francisco de Montejo
- The intersection of the Prolongación Paseo Montejo and Avenida Cámara de Comercio
Maryhann Garcia Castro, the head of the Mérida office of Axa Seguros, said the list came from pure statistics.
Axa registered 2,500 mishaps throughout the Yucatecan territory in 2016, amounting to a combined economic loss of 35 million pesos.
Accidents around the monument to 19th-century novelist Justo Sierra generate an average of three claims a month, she said.
Two accident claims a month come from the Mestiza traffic roundabout. The average cost of a road accident at these points is between 10,000 and 14,000 pesos.
The busy intersection of Paseo Montejo Prolongación and Avenida Cámara de Comercio also registers two claims per month. Traffic accidents here cost an average of 17,000 pesos, she said.
Road accidents are the second leading cause of death in Mexico for people between 5 and 35, said Aza executive Daniela Zepeda Mollinedo.
“Mexico has made progress in reducing deaths and injuries as a result of road incidents, but there is still a lot to do,” said Zepeda, who said excessive speed was the cause of many road mishaps.
