Mérida, Yucatán — After some concern that it would not take place this year, Restaurant Week is officially back.
The third edition of Mérida Restaurant Week is Sept. 24-30. An estimated 300 restaurants will offer fixed-price multi-course meals for 119 pesos.
The promotion encourages diners to discover new restaurants.
“The public would like to enjoy other places than those that come regularly, but they think it is very expensive and they do not have the opportunity, but now they will be able to do so during this promotional week, with a uniform price of 119 pesos,” explained the president of the Yucatan Delegation of the National Chamber of the Restaurant Industry and Seasoned Foods (Canirac), Alejandra Pacheco Montero.
Yucatecan, Mexican, vegan, Japanese and fusion food are among the cuisines to be served.
Last year, restaurants that participated reportedly received more than 90 million pesos in sales and 10 million pesos in tips from more than 600,000 diners. That averaged out to a sales increase of 300 percent.
Restaurants have until Sept. 6 to register.
Rising costs have forced restaurants to charge 10 more pesos than last year. Menus prices are rising across the board because of increasing food costs, restaurateurs said.
The concept — which has been repeated in cities around the world — has caught on locally. Last year’s Restaurant Week was so popular, it was extended for an eighth day.
