Mérida, Yucatán — Restaurant Week 2018, scheduled to begin on Sept. 24, may be off the menu.

The promotion is in danger of being canceled because the city has not contributed the nearly 450,000 pesos that amount to its share of promotional expenses.

Last year, Restaurant Week’s second ecdition was so popular, it was extended to an eighth day. It generated between 70 million and 90 million pesos to the restaurant industry, demonstrating 50 percent growth over the 2016 edition.

The promotion lures diners with economical, fixed-price dinners at 300 restaurants all over the city. Last year, special menus offered three courses for 109 pesos, although offers varied.

But this year, as the city administration is preparing to leave, finances at the ayuntamiento are tight. The other two sponsors, said to be a beer company and a soda company (last year, it was Dos Equis and Coca-Cola) have already contributed approximately 300,000 pesos each.

Mérida Restaurant Week was in March, but this year it was postponed due to the election.

Now a worldwide phenomenon, Restaurant Week started in New York City in the early 1990s.
