The state of Yucatán won big with the Food and Travel Magazine Reader Awards 2015, winning three of four nominations.

Mérida was called Mexico’s Best Gourmet Destination and Rosas & Xocolate in the capital, and Hotel Xixim in Celestún were named best urban hotel, and best ecotourism hotel, respectively. The only nomination Yucatán state didn’t win was best overall destination, which went to the Riviera Maya, on the other side of the peninsula.

In the early hours of Thursday, a glamorous ceremony in Mexico City named readers’ top choices among the country’s tourism industry players, where underdog Mérida beat out culinary stars such as Oaxaca and Puebla.

The winners were selected by readers on an online ballot.

With this recognition, Mérida’s achievements will be promoted worldwide, opening up fresh possibilities for tourism and economic growth.

In accepting his award, Carol Kolozs Fishers, owner of Rosa & Xocolate, highlighted the positive response aroused by this nomination, and thanked the voters who made this victory possible.

Secretary of Tourism Ancona Saul Salazar will hold a press conference at noon today to present the winners at the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya.
