Mérida has the best quality of life in Mexico, according to UN study

The U.N. Habitat Index of Prosperous Cities agrees with other surveys that Mérida is tops in Mexico.

The capital of Yucatán is No. 1 on a list of 305 cities studied in the country.

The Index of Prosperous Cities weighs several factors to determine which offers the best quality of life.

Mayor Renán Barrera Concha went to Mexico City to personally be congratulated by President Enrique Peña Nieto. A recognition ceremony that was held at the Banamex Center.

The Index of Prosperous Cities was jointly carried out by U.N. Habitat and Infonavit, guiding cities on how to set policies according to prevailing needs and conditions.

It also evaluates six aspects in each of the localities: productivity, infrastructure, quality of life, equity and social inclusion, environmental sustainability, governance and urban legislation.

Barrera Concha stressed in a statement that in addition to the economic aspect, a focus on environmental issues is already underway to make the city more sustainable.

The executive director of U.N. Habitat, Maimunah Mohd Sharif, formally delivered the full study document to Peña Nieto.

The secretaries of foreign affairs, Luis Videgaray, and of agrarian, territorial and urban development, Rosario Robles Berlanga, also attended the event.

A 2015 poll from a private consultancy also put Mérida on the top of its own livability index.

The polling firm scored cities on quality of life, satisfaction with services and satisfaction with the performance of mayors. Quality of life is measured by perceptions of safety, housing and employment opportunities.
