Mérida Carnaval 2015: ‘Caribbean Voyage’

reyes720Mérida, Yucatán — Now that the king and queen have been coronated, the city is making preparations for this year’s Carnaval.

Events run Feb. 11-18, starting with the Quema del mal humor, the Burning of the Bad Mood, at the Palacio Municipal at the Plaza Grande. The children’s parade on Thursday, Feb 12 will march up Calle 60 at 4 p.m. Most everything else will take place at the Xmatkuil fairgrounds, south of the Centro.

The theme this year is “Caribbean Voyage.” Friday, Feb. 13 is the Corso Parade, with the famous floats. This is followed by “Fantasy Saturday,” featuring actress/model Ariadne Díaz. Cuban model and dancer Lenny de Rosa appears on Bachata Sunday, and actress-model Esmeralda Pimentel and José Ron will be at the Battle of the Flowers on Tuesday.

For years, the parades were held downtown, so moving the action to the fairground last year was the source of some confusion. This year, officials are promising more and clearer signs and directions to guide visitors.
