For at least the third time, Forbes Magazine has named Mérida as one of the three best Mexican cities in which to live and invest.

Mexico City was not on the list, but three up-and-comers were, just as they were in 2011 and 2013 when Forbes hailed the same trio: Mérida, León and San Luis Potosi.

What these cities have in common is successful strategic planning to accommodate new job-creating businesses. Each has a convention center allowing them to host world-class events, which has triggered the development of new shopping centers and housing.

Mérida, Yucatán

Mérida’s safety, quality of life and strong cultural offerings, in addition to its fortuitous geographical location near a major seaport, were marks in the Yucatán capital’s favor.

Also cited were first-world medical services, skilled labor, competitive land and housing prices and a supportive, business-friendly government.

According to the consulting firm A-regional, Mérida got that way thanks to the availability of skilled labor and the presence of high-tech enterprises and insurance and banking.

The metro area — roping in Mérida, Umán and Kanasín — is the country’s 12th largest, with over 1 million people.

León, Guanajuato

Forbes calls León ideal because the city enjoys low levels of violent crime, with housing for all tastes and budgets, and top-notch public transportation. In 2011, León won an honorable mention from the Sustainable Transport Awards for its bikeway network.

León’s metro area is the country’s sixth largest, with nearly 2 million inhabitants.

San Luis Potosi, SLP

San Luis Potosi is a progressive locale in constant expansion, known for its stable political system, growing economic sectors, sustainable environment and efficient and effective government. This is evidenced by the presence of the Interceramic Group and the largest Latin American plant of L’Oreal.

Geography also favors San Luis Potosi: the city is at the heart of the “triangle” formed by the three largest cities in Mexico: Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.

The Golden Zone of San Luis Potosi is located south-west of the city, where big malls, hospitals and entertainment centers are. Here are residences starting at 1 million pesos, with high-rise condos more recently changing the skyline. Its metro-area population tops 1 million people, the 10th largest in the country.

The Investor magazine ranked San Luis Potosí and its metropolitan area as the third-best place to live in Mexico.
