Merida, Yucatan — After averaging monthly growth of nearly 20% and initiating a major expansion, airport activity has taken an understandable dive since the coronavirus outbreak restricted travel.
The shutdowns, which began in mid-March, have made for a relatively sleepy airport.
The slowdown began gradually in March, when contingencies began and 164,000 passengers passed through the Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport, a year-to-year drop of 27.2%. Now, about 800 or 900 travelers pass through daily, about 10% of what’s normal, said the airport administrator, Oscar Carrillo Maldonado.
International flights have all but ceased, and national routes have reduced dramatically. Tourists are absent. Travelers are boarding mainly out of necessity — for work or health reasons, he said.
