Mérida, Yucatán — Five months of renovations at two of the city’s neighborhood mercados will be finished by the end of the month, city officials said.

Both projects have run about six weeks behind schedule.

An investment of 7.6 million pesos will improve efficiency at Santiago’s and Col. Chuburná de Hidalgo’s markets.

Late adjustments at Col. Chuburná de Hidalgo — not the fishing village, but the Mérida neighborhood just north of Garcia Ginerés — delayed things a bit. Seven displaced tenants complained that they were not consulted on the final design.

But when finished, the market will have a better infrastructure for shoppers, said José Luis Martínez Semerena, councilman of the City of Merida.

Chuburná’s market is one of the oldest and most traditional in Mérida.

“We had some inconveniences, since among the planned modifications it was intended that the market had modern facilities, but tenants chose to keep the style that was already there,” said Martínez Semerena.

The outside food area was demolished and is being replaced completely.

Both markets are getting new floors and sanitary facilities, lighting and fans. Tile counters are being replaced with steel sheeting.

At Santiago’s market, which attracts both local and foreign shoppers, an interior green space will beautify the shopping area. The intensive overhaul is its first in 30 years.

The market offers fresh fruit and tortillas, meats, flowers and a variety of small restaurant stalls adjacent to a park and historic church.
