The Mayakan natural-gas pipeline project is scheduled to begin flowing in Yucatán by the beginning of next year.
The project will allow the region to be integrated into the National Gas Pipeline System.
When companies and households have access to natural gas, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) will be forced to reduce its rates, said the commissioner of the Energy Regulatory Commission, Guillermo Ignacio García Alcocer.
The Mérida-based energy company Mayakan will offer liquid natural gas to industry in Yucatán, which would give factories here greater growth potential.
“We are working on the growth of the gas network in the country in order to achieve the transformation that is required in the different regions of the country, such as the Mexican southeast,” said Pedro Joaquin Coldwell, leader of the business group Concanaco.
“To supply the gas required by the business sector in the states of Yucatán, Campeche and Quintana Roo, Mayakan and the National Center for Natural Gas Control, are already working in a coordinated manner for its development,” he said in a national meeting held in Campeche.
After that, a Floating Regasification Unit in Veracruz will increase gas supply in the short term, he said.
Finally, a compression station will direct the flow of gas from the northeast to the southeast.
The head of the Ministry of Economic Development, Ernesto Herrera Novelo, said that between the pipeline and various wind-energy and solar-energy projects, energy prices will be more competitive.
Yucatán is known for its high electric prices.
