Mérida, Yucatán — The regional airline MAYAir will move its base of operations from Cancun to Mérida in 30 days, said the president of the its board of directors.
Jose Luis Martinez Alday also said the carrier will add four turboprop Foccer 50 planes to the company’s fleet. A hangar is nearly complete at the Mérida’s Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport.
MAYAir already flies to Villahermosa and Tuxtla Gutierrez, and with the new planes, will add Oaxaca, Huatulco, Reynosa and Tampico to its list of destinations.
MAYAir started operations as a charter flight company in 1994 and since then has connected the peninsula to Villahermosa, Veracruz and Tuxtla Gutierrez and starting later this month, from Mérida to Chetumal. It also flies daily between Cancun and Mérida. (Timetable here.)
In 2018, a Cancún-Flores route will take travelers to Guatemala, near the archaeological zone of Tikal.
