Mérida, Yucatán — A giant Zumba session of more than 1,000 people brought salsa, merengue and other Latin rhythms to the Plaza Grande on Saturday.

The Municipal Institute of Sport’s “Mérida en Acción,” or “Mérida in Action” program encourages citizens to be active and healthy, said department director Jesús Aguilar Aguilar. The program has grown citywide since launching in 2013.

It has sprouted similar programs aimed at schools and private employers, but nothing before on such a grand scale. It took 30 trainers to lead the all the participants.

“Merida in Action” serves almost 12,000 beneficiaries each week in every colony of the city.
