Mérida, Yucatán — The Mexican photographer and director Emmanuel Lubezki, regarded by many as one of the best cinematographers in the world, was spotted at the Municipal Palace on Thursday.
The three-time Oscar winner, shooting for a private company on an unknown project, attracted the attention of many of his fans. He posed for snapshots with several of them.
Lubezki, who is from Mexico City but lives in Los Angeles, apparently saw some artistic merit in the colonnade at the base of the Palacio Municipal. He has also been shooting photography in Progreso.
The 53-year-old started in TV production in the 1980s, but since has been associated with some of Hollywood’s most acclaimed directors: Michael Mann, Joel and Ethan Coen, and Mike Nichols. He has also collaborated with Terrence Malick.
Lubezki has produced six movies with his Mexican filmmaker friend, Alfonso Cuaron, including “Children of Men,” “Gravity,” “Great Expectations,” “Solo Con Tu Pareja,” “A Little Princess” and “Y Tu Mama Tambien.”
