Mérida, Yucatán — Where Volkswagen Beetles once dominated the roads, the presence of Audis, BMWs and Merdeces Benz is quickly growing.

Economy cars are still the best-selling, but the area is leading the nation in luxury car sales growth.

Just last year were sold 14,000 high-end cars were sold here, reports Sipse.

What’s driving high-end sales? The arrival of upper-middle-class and wealthy families and entrepreneurs from cities like Monterrey, Guadalajara, Mexico City, Villahermosa and Ciudad del Carmen.

Premium cars drivers are attracted to Mérida for its relative safety and security, said David Gustavo Gutiérrez Ruiz, president of Grupo Diamante, which holds the concession on Mercedes Benz sales in southeast Mexico.

“The security provided by the state is the main factor for the marketing of premium class cars … a segment that has had the greatest growth,” he stressed.

He said that the city sells 25 percent more luxury cars than the national average.

Roads are increasingly crowded with cars of all types. In August 2,543 cars were sold in the state, up 20.4 percent compared with the same month last year.

Premium cars are still far from the majority on Yucatán’s roads. The best-selling models on the peninsula in line with the country’s favorites. They are economy models: the Nissan Versa, Chevrolet Aveo, Volkswagen Vento and the Chevrolet Spark.
