Mexico City — Five airlines are being punished for violating consumer rights, said Mexico’s consumer-protection agency.

“The penalized airlines were found to have engaged in misleading advertising, discriminatory acts, abusive clauses in their membership contracts and other practices that violate the rights of passengers,” said Profeco.

The government fined the airlines more than US$1.2 million, or 22.4 million pesos, for charging passengers to check their first bag for flights to the United States and Canada. The flights originated in Mexico City.

Volaris, Interjet, Aeroméxico, VivaAerobus and JetBlue Airways were the airlines on the receiving end of Profeco’s ire. United Airlines and American Airlines are under a probe for the same practices, the agency said.

It also established that airlines must not charge for the first checked bag up to 55 pounds/25 kilograms and two carry-ons up to 22 pounds/10 kilograms.

For delays that are the airlines fault and exceed two hours, rules also establish levels of discounts that must be offered, as well as free food and drinks.
