Chichen Itza’s “Noches de Kukulkan” won’t be quite as bright after damage from a recent lightning storm.
In a repeat of a similar mishap in Valladolid, high-tech electrical components shorted out from a lightning strike. Videomapping projectors cast vivid images on the famous temple; similar shows occur weekly in Merida’s main square.
The show, on a smaller scale, must go on, said Cultur General Director Mauricio Diaz Montalvo.
The cost of entry, until further notice, will be half off at 255 pesos, and begin at 8:30 p.m., a half-hour earlier than normal.
Diaz Montalvo added that, according to a report by engineer Edgar San Juan Gorocica, the storm cut part of the videomapping’s computer network. Some of the surrounding monuments will be dim while the iconic pyramid basks in the glow of the presentation.
Everything is being done to restore the system and return to normal as soon as possible, he said.
