Mérida, Yucatán — After months of fundraising, the Merida English Library is ready to begin its expansion.

“Although we are still waiting for final construction permits, we are able to begin the expansion project by the renovation of two existing spaces — the children’s area and the current men’s restroom,” according to a notice sent Monday to members. “The children’s area will be enlarged by knocking out the wall between the existing children’s space and the kitchen. This will give us a large area for meetings, children’s activities and more. The men’s restroom will be renovated to be a much nicer space.”

This phase of construction will force the library to shut down for the duration of the project, beginning Saturday, Aug. 4. MEL leadership estimates they will re-open as soon as mid-September.

The last Children’s Story Time is Saturday, July 28, as is the last day to accept donations. The final Conversaciones con Amigos is Monday, July 30.

The last Tuesday Writer’s Group is Tuesday, July 31, and the final Teen Night is Friday, Aug. 3.

All other activities will take place as regularly scheduled the week of July 30 – Aug. 3.

Members are asked to return borrowed books and other materials by Friday, Aug. 3.

Email meridaenglishlibrary.acboard@gmail.com to extend or renew borrowed materials.

Memberships will be credited with the time the library is closed.

To finance the project, a fundraising drive has passed the halfway point toward its goal of 1 million pesos. Contributions are accepted here.
