Leones come from behind in playoff opener

Oaxaca — The Leones de Yucatan scored four runs in the ninth inning to come from behind and beat the Guerreros de Oaxaca 6-5 in the first game of the Series de Zona playoffs at Eduardo Vasconcelos Stadium.

Yucatan prevailed despite the Guerreros’ first-inning 4-0 lead.

Yucatan’s Leo Heras scored on a hit by Jorge Flores in the fifth. An inning later, Art Charles’s double sent Luis Felipe Juárez to home base for the Leones’ second run.

The ninth-inning comeback came when Xavier Scruggs tied the game with a home run that scored Luis Juárez and Francisco Hernández. Moments later, Jorge Flores’s fly ball scored Leo Heras.

The Leones’ César Valdez left the game with no decision after striking out five rivals in seven innings. Pitching in the eighth, Enrique Burgos took the win in relief and Josh Lueke struck out three for the save. For Oaxaca, Alex Delgado worked 7.1 innings with two runs and left without decision, as Miguel Socolovich took the loss.

The second game of the series is 7 p.m. today (Wednesday) with Yoanner Negrín (13-6, 3.22 ERA) facing Ryan Kussmaul (3-0, 6.91 ERA). The action can be followed live on La Comadre 98.5 and Facebook Live.
