Despite laws banning the practice, the 10 circuses circulating in southeast Mexico continue with shows in which the animals are presented as characters, Sipse reported today.

Circus animals are reportedly still under the circus tent in Yucatan, Tabasco and Campeche. Circus owners have no alternatives to attract a crowd, according to the report.

Operators also do not know where to leave an animal under their care that can no longer be legally part of the show.

The plight of circus animals made headlines last year when a bear named Invictus, performing for Harley Circus, was found with a mutilated jaw. He had been dressed in a pink ballerina costume and forced to ride a bike just like the bear in “Madagascar 3.”
