Fireworks are sure to be popping all night long and into tomorrow morning. Fun for humans, but freaky for your dog. Loud, sudden noises are scary and disorienting for pets.

Here are some tips for helping your pooch cope.

1. When scared of sounds they can’t orient, dogs often prefer small enclosed areas, so prepare a “safe room.” Do you have an inner room that is least impacted by noise outside? It should be a room that you can close off to prevent your pet from running about the house. Put down familiar, clean bedding.

2. Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise earlier in the day.

3. Keep the curtains closed, and if possible, the windows.

4. Make sure all your dogs are wearing ID tags with a properly fitting collar. Dogs have been known to become Houdini when tormented by loud, startling sounds.

5. Leave your dog with his favorite treats and a familiar blanket.

6. Sound Therapy: Through a Dog’s Ear is specially designed classical music clinically demonstrated to calm canine anxiety issues.

7. “Dog whisperer” Cesar Milan advocates a psychological approach as well: “While humans communicate with words, dogs communicate with energy, and will look to their pack leader for clues on how they should behave,” he writes. “If you’re not making a big deal or showing excitement about the fireworks, then he will learn to be less concerned as well.”
