Yucatan Gov. Mauricio Vila Dosal on Saturday traveled to Japan to meet with leaders of a company that has agreed to build an auto parts factory in the state.
The Uchiyama Manufacturing Corp. supplies parts for Nissan, Mazda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Subaru, Suzuki, Yamaha, Hubo, Honda, General Motors and Ford. The plant is expected to bring 1,000 new jobs to Yucatan.
Vila Dosal called Uchiyama “a company of great prestige at the global level and a great ally for the development of the Yucatecan economy.”
The new facility, which will be the company’s second-largest after one in Vietnam, will be built on a 15-hectare plot in the Hunucmá industrial corridor. Uchiyama also has plants in the United States, Germany, China, Portugal, Paraguay and India.
In the Americas, while the company has distribution centers in Detroit, Mich.; and León, Guanajuato, the manufacturing plant in Yucatan would be its first in Mexico.
The Japanese company has a long history. It began in 1898 as the Uchiyama Cork-Stopper Factory. Over time, it added synthetic rubber and synthetic resins to produce today’s gaskets and sealing materials for cars and industrial machines.
On Friday the governor finalized negotiations to secure Uchiyama’s US$65 million investment.
