International dance festival returns to Mérida

Mérida, Yucatán — Visitors from Colombia, Peru, Spain and Costa Rica will participate in the IX edition of the contemporary dance festival, Festival Yucatán Escénica: La Magia del Cuerpo (Yucatan Scenic Festival: The Magic of the Body).

The festival from Nov. 9 to 17 at the Centro de Investigaciones Artísticas Gerónimo Baqueiro Fóster (calle 61, between 50 and 52, Centro), the MACAY museum (calle 60 #502-B Altos, Pasaje de la Revolución) and La Cúpula cultural center (Calle 54, between 41 and 43).

Performances will feature leading national and international dance companies such as Plataforma de Híbridos, from Colombia; Íntegro, from Peru; Lamajara, from Spain; Escénica Contemporánea, from Mexico; among others, said Lourdes Luna Aranda, director of Créssida Danza Contemporánea, host company of the event.

Luna Aranda’s group will perform “Gota: Minimum Actions Converted into the Sea,” which they performed at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City in July.

The next day the festival will continue with the program “Intimo Alterno.” On Sunday, Nov. 11, the Colombian company Plataforma Híbridos will present the piece “Comala,” inspired by the work of Mexican writer Juan Rulfo.

On Monday, Nov. 12, the Peruvian group Íntegro will be presented with the piece “Spirala;” and on Tuesday, Nov. 13, the Spanish collective Lamajara will perform “Al Voltant,” and Laura Vera will offer “The Sign of the Butterfly.” All these performances begin at 9 p.m.

At 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, “The Night of Hip Hop” will bring together urban dancers and interpreters; and on Friday, Nov. 16, Nerea Martínez will present “Biraka,” also at 8.

In addition to the aforementioned activities, a special video dance function will be carried out, in coordination with the National Art Network, through the Festival Internacional de Videodanza; on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m., at La Cúpula Cultural Center.
