The Presidente InterContinental will not close after all, but rather continue under another famous name.

Grupo Presidente will transfer ownership of the iconic hotel, built from the ruins of an old mansion, to the Hilton chain, said a company official.

The parent company will then focus on its new 207-room hotel down Avenida Colon, the Courtyard by Marriott, which is in a prime spot across from the new convention center.

The transformation from an InterContinental to a Hilton will happen in the next few days, local media reported.

The company said the InterContinental’s exit from the site was planned, and not connected to coronavirus pandemic, which caused tourism in Yucatan to crater and all but 12 hotels to close.

The posh 127-room hotel-zone icon was a general’s mansion at the turn of the last century. It was rebuilt into a hotel in 2000 and renovated in 2016.
