Mérida, Yucatán — The International Hurricane Seminar returns to the Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport for the 13th time in March, well ahead of 2018’s hurricane season.
The seminar is held under the auspices of the Aeropuertos del Sur (ASUR), which manages Mérida’s airport and several others across Mexico and Puerto Rico.
Some 150 people — many of them security officers from other airports — are expected to arrive in time for the March 5-6 event to the latest advancements in hurricane forecasting and preparations.
Héctor Navarrete Muñoz, director of Asur said attendees will learn the progress made by the National Hurricane Center of Miami, which provide information and assessments of the next storm season, which begins June 1 for the Atlantic and Caribbean coasts.
He promised prominent speakers, including Lixión Ávila, the dean of Florida meteorologists and expert on the subject.
Ávila spoke at April 2017’s hurricane seminar, where he predicted a quiet hurricane season, a sign that the science of hurricane prediction is far from perfect. That prediction was revised the following month when it became clear that signals were indicating a rough year ahead.
Founded in 1964, the National Hurricane Center is the division of the United States’ National Weather Service, and is tasked with tracking and predicting destructive weather systems. The agency, co-located with the Miami branch of the National Weather Service, is based at Florida International University in University Park, Fla.
