Updated to correct the number of accumulated deaths in Yucatan: Yucatan state health officials on Wednesday announced 200 more coronavirus cases and 28 deaths as the pandemic shows no sign of easing in Mexico. Over half of the 1,092 COVID-related deaths in Yucatan have taken place in July alone, when deaths have averaged 21 a day.

Fatalities in the past day included 21 men and 7 women ranging from 30 to 79 years of age.

Additionally, hospitalizations shot up by 26 for a total of 536 patients. On Tuesday, hospitals in Merida and Valladolid took on 12 more coronavirus patients, straining capacity and medical supplies. The other 370 current patients are at home under quarantine.

Another 136 were declared free of the virus for a 78.5% recovery rate in Yucatan.

Of the 200 new cases, 128 were in Merida. There were 20 infections in Valladolid and six each in Temozón and Ticul, the latter of which has the highest rate of contagion when its number of cases were weighed against the size of its population. Yucatan has totaled 9,283 infections since the crisis began in March.

Six of the deaths were patients from Merida, four from Ticul, three from Umán, three from outside the state or country, two from Motul, and one from Halachó, Izamal, Kanasín, Maxcanú, Opichén, Progreso, Teabo, Tizimín, Uayma and Ucú.

Meanwhile, the San Benito market, the largest of its kind in Merida, resumed sales of non-essential merchandise such as sandals and jewelry. Entrances were still restricted, however, and elderly and pregnant customers were still banned from the complex. Mercados are thought to inherently carry high risk for infection. Forty-seven vendors there, and at the adjacent Lucas de Gálvez market, tested positive for coronavirus in May.
