Easter holidays in Yucatán poured 1.2 billion pesos into the economy, a 20 percent increase over last year, says the business group Kanak Servytur.

The period of March 27 to April 12 brought over a million visitors, mainly from other states within Mexico. The coastal areas were the busiest.

The port city did not sleep, reports Diario de Yucatán. Over 150,000 visitors are estimated to have arrived yesterday, compared to the 220,000 who swarmed the city on Easter. On Progreso’s malecon, the holiday concluded with an electronic-music concert that attracted hundreds of youths. The concert ended at 2 a.m., but the streets reportedly stayed active for hours afterwards.

The crowd was overwhelming. The Segundo Movimiento volunteer group has been organizing about 100 people to clean up after the party goers and they have had their work cut out for them.

Smaller villages were quieter. To the west, in Sisal, service providers counted about 4,000 visitors after an Easter Sunday tally of 7,000. To the east, In Cuyo, Tizimín, a hotel manager said that this weekend has been weak, with few people.
