Merida, Yucatan — Hennessy’s Irish Pub has been shortlisted for Pub of the Year in the Americas as well as three other categories.

The Irish Hospitality Global Awards also nominated Hennessy’s as Best Community Pub, Best Entertainment Experience and for Best Chef.

“Once again I have to thank my great team and also you my great customers and friends for your nominations and the honour of being shortlisted yet again this year,” said owner Sean Hennessy, on Facebook. “We will do our best to get first place. Thank you all (Go raibh mile maith agat).”

That last phrase repeats the thanks in Irish.

Winners will be announced at a gala at the Mansion House’s Round Room in Dublin on Oct. 8.

A friendly pub that serves comforting food and offers a huge beer selection, Hennessy’s rocked the expat world when it opened on St. Patrick’s Day 2011.

The Henry Ponce-designed pub was made over from an old mansion on the Paseo de Montejo, is a hub of activities in English, from book signings to political gatherings. Live music often energizes the space.

Hennessy’s faces stiff competition from all of North America (no nominatins appeared from South America), including Irish Times in Victoria, Canada and The Dead Rabbit in New York City.

The nominations follow an online campaign which received over 20,000 votes from customers all over the world.

Nominated pubs in Ireland also include Zozimus on Anne’s Lane, John Kavanagh “The Gravediggers” in Glasnevin, Kazbar in Waterford, and Nel Sweeney’s in County Wexford.

Outside Ireland, nominees also include Scholars Lounge in Rome; McNulty’s in La Rochelle, France; Doc Magilligan’s in Niagara Falls, New York; and Seumus’ Irish Bar in Picton, New Zealand.

“We were delighted to see so many votes coming in from all corners of the globe in support of the diaspora’s favourite Irish pubs,” said Irish Hospitality Global CEO Sarah Murphy. “It is a testament to the longstanding Irish traditions of warmth and hospitality, both at home in Ireland and across the world.”

In 2018, Hennessy’s won for best marketing campaign in the Americas. Tír na Nóg, which operates out of Madison Square Garden in New York City, beat out all competition to be named Pub of the Year, in the Americas.
