Shrinking beaches have put 1,300 properties in danger, but Yucatán’s beach rescue program is out of money, said a state official.
When the next administration begins in September, state budgets will be replenished, said Eduardo Batllori Sampedro, secretary of Urban Development and Environment (Seduma).
Almost half the affected properties — 700 of them — are in Celestún, he said. Progreso and Chicxulub, where sand was trucked in, is again suffering from beach erosion.
“But there are not many resources anymore,” Batllori Sampedro told Diario de Yucatán.
The state official said he hopes the next administration will continue efforts to protect private properties from rising sea levels, in cooperation with municipalities.
Breakwaters will be needed at 11 beaches, he said. Geotubes have been submerged at two existing jetties, and an experimental dredging project is being monitored at Telchac. Researchers from UNAM, the national university, are expected to report on the project’s results.
He blamed municipalities for allowing construction in flood zones.
