Hard Rock and other hotel chains prepare to check in

Hotel boom of the last 2 years totals 2.5 billion pesos in outside investments

The Hard Rock and five other international brands are coming to Merida, Yucatan for the first time.

Merida, Yucatan — With the arrival of six transnational lodging companies, in 2019 there will be 5,000 more guest rooms in the capital city.

Merida’s hotels will collectively have 17,500 rooms once the chain hotels establish their brands here.

The Hard Rock, Acua, Camino Real, Marriott, Starwood and Madrid-based NH Collection are first-time investors in Merida, said the president of the Hotel Association of Yucatan, Héctor Navarrete Muñoz.

These name brands are attracted by the upward commercial, industrial and touristic trend in Merida, said Navarrete Muñoz.

Hotels already established in Merida — Misión, Posadas and Xixin — expand their presence with the commissioning of new hotels here.

The entire state attracts multiple travel sectors: medical, business, recreation, romance and conventions, Navarrete Muñoz said.

Grupo Misión, which has a hotel in the Centro, will build two hotels, one executive type and one large-scale. A new five-star hotel on the Paseo Montejo will have 300 rooms and a commercial plaza.

Grupo Posada will build a new Fiesta Inn while undertaking a massive renovation of its prominent Fiesta Americana in the hotel zone. And the Starwood plans 160 luxury rooms.

Merida’s hotel boom, which began two years ago, has accounted for 2.5 billion pesos in investment, said the association president.

He said that the month of November will close with an average occupancy rate of 70 percent as a result of the conventions, concerts and other events that took place.
