Mérida, Yucatán — Earthquakes across Mexico have toned down celebrations at the new H&M department store at the Galerías mall here.

Saturday’s grand opening took place two days later than planned, and what was to be a gift-card giveaway was redirected as a donation to the Mexican Red Cross.

About 60 people came to the inauguration of Yucatán’s first H&M, an international chain based in Sweden.

The retailer is also accepting used clothing and food donations for earthquake victims in exchange for two 15-percent-off coupons.

And for every gift card purchased, a donation equal to the card’s value will be sent to the Red Cross.

With over 4,500 stores, H&M is the world’s second-largest global clothing retailer.
