Merida, Yucatan — The city hosted guided tours of the Paseo de Montejo for just a brief period, but they caught on fast.

Around 1,380 people took advantage of “Montejo, Past Splendor” tours between Dec. 10 and 29.

The Director of Tourism and Economic Development of the City of Mérida, Eduardo Seijo Solís, said visitors enjoyed learning the history of the most emblematic monuments, buildings and historical sites in the area.

Guides spoke both English and Spanish and the tours lasted 90 minutes, starting at the sidewalk tourist booth near the Holiday Inn.

“In the last 10 days we have more than 100 people for each of the tours,” Seijo Solís said.

The tour route included a visit to the old Club Bancarios building, the Fiesta Americana Hotel, part of which was originally a private men’s club. Quinta Montes Molina, Casa del Minarete, the Museum of Anthropology and Casas Gemelas (the Twin Houses) were also pointed out and explained to visitors.

Historic monuments to Justo Sierra and Felipe Carrillo Puerto and the grand Monumento a la Patria were naturally on the route.
