Tizimin’s first-ever ice cream fair won’t be a plain-vanilla festival.

The Feria Gastronómica del Helado will feature Yucatan’s twist on frozen treats: relleno negro, cochinita, jícama and chiltomatec con longaniza (pork and beans) flavors will be served, in addition to the traditional chocolate, vanilla and strawberry.

For cups of ice cream, in addition to cones and popsicles, prices will range from 10 to 25 pesos.

The gastronomy graduate and organizer of the event, Rodrigo Aguilar Rosel, explained the fair will also feature exhibits from restaurants and snack bars, hotels and travel agencies, as well as artisans. Its 50 exhibition spaces will also include vendors from Valladolid and San Felipe and from as far away as Guanajuato and Zacatecas.

The goal of the fair is to lift the local economy and promote the city, little by little, he said.

Ice-cream lovers should mark their calendar for Sunday, July 7. The event will be held in the main esplanade from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

An ice-cream-eating contest will decide the “Rey Helado,” or the king of ice cream.

Tizimin, about two hours east of Merida, is known for its traditional Christmas Magi festival, and is a major artisan market selling rebozos, huipils, tablecloths, jewelry and guayaberas. The city also is the leading producer of beef cattle in Yucatan.
