Progreso, Yucatán — Two municipal employees will be the first to have a same-sex wedding in the port city next month.
The pair, whose names have not been released to the public, told Progreso Hoy that they have fought “against the odds,” spending several months to prepare for a Jan. 18 ceremony.
One of them, 39, works for the police department, while the other, 28, has an administrative position.
The news has spread like wildfire among relatives and close friends, and there is much anticipation for this historic union, reports the newspaper.
Yucatán’s first such marriage took place in Mérida in 2013 when Javier Alberto Carrillo Esquivel and Ricardo Arturo Gongora tied the knot. The state registry reports two other same-sex marriages in 2014.
Since 2013, Mexican Supreme Court has strongly backed marriage equality, but Mexico’s complicated legal system means couples still have to sue to marry.
