The Archdiocese of Yucatán shares its collection of sacred art today with a museum kickoff in Conkal.
The priceless collection of religious-themed art takes up six rooms in the 16th-century former Franciscan Convent of Conkal.
The site, next to the parish of St. Francis of Assisi, adds to the cultural and tourist offerings of the state. The 20-peso entrance fee will go toward a restoration fund. Children are admitted free. Guided tours to groups up to 15 people will be offered by appointment.
Named the Galería de Arte Sacro de la Arquidiócesis de Yucatán, the attraction debuts today at 8 p.m. with a ceremony — complete with choral music — officiated by Archbishop of Yucatán, Monseñor Gustavo Rodríguez Vega.
Normal hours begin tomorrow. The gallery will be open to the public 9 a.m. to 1. p.m. Tuesday to Friday and Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The spaces house murals that are over 20 square meters, paintings from the seventeenth century, original altarpieces and reproductions. More than 80 pieces from the 16th to the 20th century are on display, including sculptures, pieces of furniture and personal items belonging to bishops through history. Among the manuscripts that will be unveiled for the first time is the decree establishing the Archdiocese of Yucatán in 1907.
The site was home to the Museum of Sacred Art, which closed three years ago after operating for 15 years. But this time, the museum will employ a more dynamic approach, church officials told Sipse. Temporary and thematic exhibitions are also planned.
