Mérida, Yucatán — The first of three glass skyscrapers that comprise the Country Towers opens today, bringing residential living in Mérida literally to new heights.

The “Aqua” tower is, like its two counterparts, 30 floors tall, and visible for miles in the Altabrisa neighborhood.

They are officially the tallest buildings in the city, well surpassing the Hyatt Regency Hotel, which had held that honor since the 1990s. In fact, it’s higher than any building from Puebla to Panama, Diario de Yucatán reported today.

The owners of Diario are said to be living in a penthouse unit in the complex.

State and city authorities will gather for a ceremony tonight, and tenants will begin arriving a few days later. The Aqua tower is sold to 95 percent occupancy; the second tower is 85 percent sold out.

“We would have liked a little more inventory, but undoubtedly the acceptance has been great,” said Roberto Kelleher Vales, an investor partner in the collaboration between U-Calli of Monterrey and Inmobilia Yucatán.

Construction generated 550 direct jobs, with 80 percent of construction work coming from the local labor pool.

For residents, amenities include pools, a putting green, spa, gym, tennis and paddle courts, jogging track, multipurpose room, cinema room, junior’s club, senior’s club, wine cave, library, business center and coffee stop. The complex is designed with a minimalist, modern aesthetic.

“It will be like living in a luxury resort, but with the warmth of home” said Kelleher.

A two-bedroom, three-bath condo unit on 12th floor, with dressing room, living room, family room, finished kitchen, and two parking spaces was listed for 5.4 million pesos or US$384,832. A three-bedroom, three-bath penthouse with a jacuzzi in its own roof garden was listed for 11.2 million pesos or US$813,230.
