Mérida, Yucatán — Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations here are not complete here without things that go boom.
So in time for the holidays, fireworks sales started Friday in the Centro and other parts of the city. Expect to see more vendors setting up along the streets in the coming days.
Shortly after 10 a.m., several merchants began displaying various pyrotechnic products, as well as safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, as well as warning signs and permits that accredit them as sellers.
Perhaps the busiest spot for fireworks is at the historic Portales De Granos on Calle 65 and 50, where Municipal Police were dispatched to check that sellers were within the law. One newspaper reported that at least one vendor was ordered to leave.
Several sellers expressed their optimism about sales, which last until Sunday, Dec. 24, and will resume from Dec. 29 to 31.
“It should go well; every year we are doing well, we hope that this year will, too,” said one, quoted in La Jornada Maya. Vendors can earn up to 40,000 pesos in three days by selling pyrotechnics to the public.
The city has issued 345 permits to vendors selling fireworks, 100 of which are for kiosks in the Centro. Most of the other vendors head to the south and west of the city.
