Expat haven San Miguel de Allende is finally getting its own airport, and it could be part of the Mayan Route.
According to Milenio, Fernando Olivera Rocha, secretary of tourism in Guanajuato, announced at the Acapulco Tianguis Turistico that private investment of 300 million pesos will support the project.
The airport will be built on land where there is just an air strip. A terminal building and larger runway will be erected and ready by the end of the year.
Now approved by the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics, construction begins next month.
San Miguel, one of Mexico’s original retirement or second-home locations for U.S. and Canadian citizens, is an hour-and-a-half from two airports. The sprawling city in the central highlands has an estimated 5,000 expatriates.
The San Miguel airport will be of international character, and receive flights from the United States, particularly Dallas and Houston. Los Cabos and Baja California Sur are also natural markets for the airport, said Olivera Rocha.
San Miguel is also a possible connection on the Mayan route, a flagship federal linking destinations in Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Yucatán and Oaxaca.
Guanajuato International Airport has direct flights to Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Atlanta. The Queretaro International Airport connects with fewer U.S cities but has numerous domestic flights.
