Mérida, Yucatán — The state attorney general’s office reports that home burglaries in the city are down by 12.5 percent so far this year.

During the first quarter of 2016, 452 burglaries were reported; in 2017 there have been 396, officials said.

January, October and November are months when burglars tend to be most active, the AG’s office said.

This year’s numbers would have been even lower if it weren’t for a group of thieves that police are still looking for.

Their modus operandi is particularly nasty: after hitting a home, they set a fire to burn their tracks. In less than two months, they have hit four homes, most recently in Col. Mexico.
