Mérida, Yucatán — The Ministry of the Interior has counted 155 cases of Yucatecans being forced to return to their homeland in 2017 after being expelled from the United States.
The count doesn’t include deportations in July or August, but it does represent a decline over 2016.
In Campeche, 226 people were sent back to Mexico, and 118 in Quintana Roo.
The vast majority of the deportees were men, the Ministry noted. Only three immigrants returned to Yucatán were women. One was a minor, between 12 and 17, traveling unaccompanied.
In Campeche, 15 were women; in Quintana Roo, 12.
The state seeing the most people return from the U.S. is Michoacán, with a total of 7,378 Mexican citizens returning. Of those, 756 are women.
Between February and May, the number of Mexicans repatriated by the U.S. actually fell 27 percent from the previous year, said Mexican foreign minister Luis Videgaray. The crackdown under the Trump White House has led to more arrests, but that is relatively easy compared to deporting an undocumented immigrant, which often involves a court case.
Sixty percent of undocumented immigrants sent back to Mexico have been in the United States for a decade or more.
