An earthquake was reported in the Gulf of Mexico, about 257 kilometers/160 miles southeast of New Orleans and 759 kilometers/472 miles north of Progreso.
The quake was recorded at 11:47 a.m. Sunday.
No tremors on land, much less damage, were reported as of mid-afternoon and no tsunami threat was issued for either side of the border, which runs through the Gulf.
The U.S. National Weather Service office in Slidell, La., said the quake was of 4.5 magnitude, while Mexico’s Servicio Sismológico Nacional measured 5.2. That puts it in the light-to-moderate range, damaging only poorly constructed buildings if its epicenter were on land.
In the last three days, earthquakes between 4.8 and 6.1 were also felt in Hawaii, El Salvador and the Philippines.
