Durango, Dgo. — Perhaps tired from a fourth consecutive day of play and a five-hour road trip from Aguascalientes, the Yucatan Leones fell 6-1 to the Generales de Durango on Friday.

On a night the Leones’ bats went quiet, pitcher Cesar Valdez lacked hit support and left the game after seven innings, down 2-1.

Valdez (9-1) allowed two runs and eight hits while striking out five in the Mexican League game, his first setback since joining the team this year. He allowed no bases on balls.

The winning pitcher, Amilcar Gaxiola (3-1) allowed just three hits over 6 1/3 innings, also striking out three and walking three, allowing one run.

The Leones, with their four hits and at least three walks given up by Gaxiola, squandered their few opportunities on Friday.

Durango got on the board first in the third inning when Carlos Garzon scored when a runner was thrown out and Aneury Tavarez scored on a single.

The Leones cut into the deficit in the seventh inning when Luis Juarez scored on a groundout.

At two hours and 32 minutes, it was the quickest game this season at the opponent’s home field.

The Leones’ chance for a comeback is today (Saturday) in the second of three games at Francisco Villa Stadium.

Tonight’s game is 5 p.m. with José Samayoa (1-2, 3.38) and Iván Piñeyro (2-0, 2.89) on the mound. La Comadre 98.5 and internetv will provide live broadcasts.
