Add another north-of-the-border city — Miami — to the list of daily direct flights from the Mérida International Airport.

Aeroméxico is promising daily direct flights to the iconic Florida city beginning in September. This is the first direct flight on a daily schedule from Mérida to Florida in many years.

Currently, the Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport offers direct flights to Houston, Dallas and Toronto, all destinations relevant to English-speaking expats and snowbirds. It flies direct now to Miami on a four-times-a-week schedule.

Until the new Miami route, Florida-bound travelers fly from Mexico City or Cancun to avoid layovers.

The airline also announced new direct domestic flights to Guadalajara and Monterrey, two important business destinations.

An Aeroméxico executive said the new international flight is a joint effort involving the state government, the city of Mérida and the Yucatán business community.

“… Aeroméxico is committed to Mérida, to Yucatán, its authorities and its people,” said Jorge Goytortua Bores, in Spanish.

State Tourism Secretary Saúl Ancona Salazar said easier access to Miami has been a standing request by travelers living here.

“Always Miami has been a traditional destination of the Yucatán and the Peninsula … an airline does not place a flight just because you have leftover a plane. It does it because it sees business opportunity and take profits.”

The Florida-bound plane will be an 99-seat Embraer 190, with 11 premiere spots. Schedules will be announced in the coming months, but economy-class fares are estimated to be between $459 and $700 dollars.
