Mérida, Yucatán — Yucatecan families will indulge their children to the tune of between 600 and 1,000 pesos when they celebrate the Dia del Niño on Monday, April 30.

Children’s Day means toys, games and dinner out for lucky kids whose parents observe the annual Mexican holiday. School is in session, but along with malls, restaurants and parks, they hold big celebrations with games, candy and music.

The toys aren’t as lavish as the ones handed out on Three Kings Day or Christmas, but can range from dolls, action figures to PlayStation games.

Parents told Sipse that the amount they spend depends on how many children they are buying toys for.

But the real bonanza goes to the restaurants who serve kid-friendly hamburgers, pizzas and wings, reports Sipse.

The holiday will pump 19 billion pesos into the local economy, says Canaco, the business chamber.
