Nine coronavirus patients died and 45 new cases were detected in the last 24 hours, Yucatan health officials said Tuesday.
Another 51 patients have broken free from COVID-19 for a 67.5% official recovery rate. That percentage, however, is based on the government’s tally of 1,581 infections. The true number of people with the infection is calculated to be 5,853 based on known data.
Today’s health ministry briefing brings to 162 the number of deaths in Yucatan since coronavirus was first found in March. In the last seven days alone, 40 have died.
A 37-year-old man from Umán, with no previous health problems, was the youngest to perish since late Monday. An 83-year-old man with hypertension, and who had come in contact with a confirmed coronavirus victim, was the oldest. Most fatalities were in their 50s and 60s.
Of the newly found infections, 26 are from Mérida, three from Progreso, two each from Chemax, Izamal, Kanasín and Valladolid and one case each in Chocholá, Dzidzantún, Dzitás, Hocabá, Kaua, Maxcanú, Seyé and Ticul.
Active cases include 212 patients under home quarantine. Hospitals have admitted 140, four fewer than Monday.
O’Horán Hospital Epidemiologist Salvador Gómez Carro said that COVID-19 infections are expected to continue increasing, stressing that it is very difficult to forecast the duration of the health crisis.
Recent trends indicate that the peak of the pandemic in Yucatan has not yet been reached, he told Punto Medio.
